Fantasy hockey drafts rarely go exactly according to plan, and despite having the first overall pick in a 12-team, 16-round league, I found myself having to tackle several doubts just to give the roster a strong scoring foundation — starting with the never-ending debate of whether to draft Connor McDavid or Nathan MacKinnon with the first overall pick. From there, I focused on building a strong forward line, leaving defensive depth and goaltending options for later rounds. Questionable approach? Maybe. But the amount of talent collected in the first few rounds could cover any deficiencies in other areas.

The result was a roster built around McDavid, Jack Eichel and Mikko Rantanen at the top, with several calculated risks and potential value picks emerging as the draft progressed. Here's a round-by-round look at how the roster came together, the strategy behind each selection and where the biggest strengths and weaknesses lie heading into the 2026-27 season.

No. 1 Pick Strategy: McDavid vs MacKinnon

Let's start by saying that there's no clear consensus on who should be the first overall pick between McDavid and MacKinnon — two generational talents on their own right. McDavid appeared in all 82 regular-season games last year for the first time since the 2022-23 campaign, and he generated 48 goals, 90 assists, 44 PIM, 40 hits and 30 blocked shots while averaging a career-high 23:00 of ice time. He led the league with 138 points.

As for MacKinnon, he finished the 2025-26 season with 127 points, the second-best output of his career and the fourth consecutive campaign in which he notched at least 110 points. He's been extremely durable as well, missing just five regular-season games in the last three seasons. I could've gone with either as the No. 1 overall pick, but I decided to pick McDavid due to the body of work. He has recorded at least 100 points in all but two of his 11 seasons in the NHL.

Building Elite Forward Depth

After landing McDavid as my player to build the roster around, it was time to add more key players to the mix. Granted, I could've chosen a key defenseman with the last pick of the second round or the first selection in the third, but I decided to go with more firepower on offense. That translated to Jack Eichel and Mikko Rantanen heading to my team with the 24th and 25th overall picks, respectively.

Eichel should anchor the Golden Knights' first line and first power-play unit in 2026-27, and he's one of the most prolific centers in the league while playing a prominent role in one of the best offenses. The 29-year-old is perhaps going through the best stretch of his career and is coming off back-to-back seasons with 90 points. As for Rantanen, even though he played only 64 regular-season games in 2025-26, he still produced at a point-per-game pace with 77 points (22 goals, 55 assists).

Rantanen's scoring numbers could improve, but let's not forget he plays alongside Jason Robertson and Wyatt Johnston, two elite scoring options in their own right. My team now has three players who should contribute well above a point-per-game pace if healthy, but I wasn't done bolstering the offense.

I had to wait until the final pick of the fourth round to select again, and I went with offense again, targeting two more players who should hover around the 80-point plateau: Clayton Keller and Tim Stutzle in the fourth and fifth rounds, respectively. Keller had 88 points in 2025-26 (26 goals, 62 assists) and has notched at least 76 points in four seasons in a row. Meanwhile, Stutzle made 80 regular-season appearances last year and generated 34 goals, 49 assists, 126 hits, 44 blocked shots and 39 PIM while averaging 20:16 of ice time.

That's five forwards in the first five rounds -- which should draw plenty of criticism, I know. But on the other hand, this gives me five elite options to anchor my offense on a regular basis. If the goal is to outscore opponents and win the offensive categories -- mission accomplished.

Late-Round Defense and Goalie Picks

Leaving the blue line and the goaltending for the later rounds was a questionable decision that can either go down as a genius move — or the reason why I won't make the playoffs in this league. The first defensive selection was Erik Karlsson, who was my seventh-round pick after a 2025-26 season in which he had 66 points (15 goals, 51 assists). The 17-year veteran has had at least 50 points in four seasons in a row, so at least on paper, he should be a steady building block.

The second defenseman came in the ninth round with Brock Faber, who posted a career-high 51 points (15 goals, 36 assists) in 2025-26 while appearing in 80 regular-season contests. The rest of the defensive group isn't particularly impressive — Mattias Ekholm, Neal Pionk and Justin Faulk round out the blue line. I'm backing Pionk to post a bounce-back season after he was limited to just 51 outings in 2025-26 while tallying three goals, 12 points, 37 PIM, 111 hits and 75 blocks.

The goaltending situation wasn't any better — the picks were Carter Hart in the 10th round and Joel Hofer in the 13th round. Hart is expected to be the starter for the Golden Knights after a strong end to the 2025-26 campaign, but he's far from being a game-changing option between the pipes. Hofer is slated to open the year in a split share with Jordan Binnington in St. Louis, meaning he'll probably be a matchup-based alternative — though we've seen him take over as the No. 1 before. The strategy could backfire, so this is a position in which the waiver wire might be needed to adjust as the season goes on.

Roster Strengths and Weaknesses for 2026-27

It's clear that my goal was trying to rack up as much forward talent as possible to dominate the scoring categories, but that creates some risks across the board. McDavid, Eichel and Rantanen form an elite top three, while the addition of Keller and Stützle gives the roster five forwards projected to surpass the 80-point mark relatively comfortably. Depth-wise, players like Roope Hintz, Steven Stamkos and Brad Marchand give the team incredible forward depth.

However, question marks remain on the blue line. Waiting until Round 7 for the first defenseman meant sacrificing access to the elite tier. Granted, Karlsson and Faber provide a respectable foundation on defense, but neither is considered a spectacular pick. There isn't an obvious anchor on defense, meaning the upper-end talent provided by the likes of Cale Makar, Quinn Hughes or Zach Werenski, just to name a few, simply isn't there.

The goaltending situation is questionable as well, but that was part of the approach. Hart should handle the No. 1 role for the Golden Knights, and Hofer should at least split the workload in St. Louis, but neither is a game-changing presence between the posts. Both would have to outperform their ADPs considerably to be considered worthy selections.

Still, that's a calculated weakness, not an accidental one. The roster was built to dominate offensive production and use forward depth to compensate for greater volatility elsewhere. If Hart establishes himself in Vegas and builds on his strong end of the 2025-26 season, the decision to wait on goaltending could become a solid decision once it's all said and done.
